AFFECTIVE DISORDER WITH BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER



Abstract
Borderline personality disorder that is frequently observed in psychiatric realm is a disorder which draws much attention of psychiatrists and which is much researched.
Many Aixs I disorders often coexist with borderline personlity disorder, including panic disorder, substance use disorders, affective disorders, gender identity disorder and homosexuality, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and eating disorders. (Gunderson, 1984)¢¥)
The earlier borderline personality disoder research focused on the association with schizophrenia(Gunderson, 1982)2), but this has be-come less drawing attention with DSM-I(1 ex-traction of the schizotypal personality disorder and the attention is focused now on the association with other personality, eating, substance use, and affective disorders.
Among these, affective disorders possess overlapping and interactive etiologies and pathogeneses with borderline personality disorder(Davis & Akiskal 1986, Gunderson & Elliott 1985)3),4) and have many similar symptoms to borderline perosnality disorder.
The comorbidity of borderline personality disorder with affective disorders, particularly dysthymia and major depression, is extensive, (Davis & Akiskal, 1986 ; Gunderson & Elliot, 1985 ; McGlashan, 1987a).3),4),5)
We have experienced a case of affecticve disorder with borderline personality disorder and report it with a review of the association of borderline personality disorder and affective disorders and the effect of affective disorders in patients with borderline personality disorder
